SIU searches Midrand property for Bentley linked to Tembisa Hospital fraud case

On 30 October 2026, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) conducted a search of a Midrand property looking for a Bentley allegedly connected to Hangwani Morgan Maumela, a suspect in the Tembisa Hospital corruption and procurement fraud case. The vehicle was not found during the operation, the SIU confirmed.

SIU spokesperson Selby Makgotho told Cape Flats News, “We found that this is an office, a house turned office and there is no one. Even the vehicle that we are looking for is not here. However, we are going on with the search.” The investigation is part of a broader asset-recovery effort targeting luxury vehicles believed to have been acquired through proceeds of fraud.

Makgotho further explained, “We are currently looking for eight vehicles on the Maumela syndicate. Currently, the curator is in possession of 15 vehicles, and there are eight outstanding.” According to reports, the outstanding vehicles include four Ferraris, three Porsches, and the Bentley that the SIU sought in Midrand.

The search at the Midrand property followed an anonymous whistleblower tip that the Bentley was located there. However, the tip remains unverified as the unit left the premises without recovering the vehicle. News24 reported the search involved unmarked SIU vehicles and a deputy sheriff. The SIU statement, as cited by IOL, said, “the Bentley was not found at the premises.”

This operation links to a Special Tribunal order dating back to October 2025, which required all individuals connected to the so-called Maumela syndicate to disclose assets, movable and immovable property, funds, debts, and claims under oath. The SIU previously secured preservation orders totalling approximately R1.4 billion, with a R900 million order in one case and a R503 million order in another.

While the asset-preservation phase of this investigation continues, there have been no new criminal charges announced from this specific search. The search reflects ongoing efforts to account for and recover assets connected to alleged corruption at the Tembisa Hospital procurement project. The exact ownership of the Midrand property searched or definitive forfeiture of the Bentley remains unclear based on available reporting.

The case is still developing. Cape Flats News will continue to monitor for updates on the recovery of the outstanding luxury vehicles and further legal actions in the Tembisa Hospital fraud investigation.
