Two people were killed and three others injured in a drive-by shooting in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, on the evening of Tuesday, 13 October 2026. The fatalities were ANC Youth League members aged 21 and 23. The incident occurred after a memorial service held at Mogobeng Primary School in Tshongweni, Katlehong.
Police and emergency medical teams responded to the scene promptly. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni were present during the aftermath, underscoring the gravity of the incident. According to Gauteng provincial spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga, “Two people have died and three more were left injured in a drive-by shooting incident in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni.”
Among the injured are individuals ranging from about 12 to 27 years old, though the exact ages remain partially unverified. A 12-year-old child was among those wounded. One suspect handed himself over to police shortly after the shooting, according to Gauteng police sources cited by TimesLIVE.
The Gauteng Political Killings Task Team has taken over the investigation due to the politically sensitive nature of the victims’ affiliations and the context of the incident. Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed the identities and deaths of the two ANC Youth League members, reiterating the ongoing investigations to establish motive and circumstances.
While the attack followed a memorial service connected to local politics, authorities have yet to confirm whether the shooting was targeted or the motive behind the attack. No claims regarding the shooter’s intent or affiliations have been independently verified by multiple sources at this time.
The Katlehong community remains shaken by the violence, and police continue their investigations. Updates will be reported as more information becomes available.
