China urges Iran and US to resume dialogue and peaceful negotiations

China has called for Iran and the United States to choose peace and resume diplomatic dialogue, emphasising political and diplomatic methods as the path to resolving disputes. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, made this appeal during a press briefing in Beijing on 30 September 2026.

“China supports resolving disputes through political and diplomatic means,” Guo said, reiterating Beijing’s stance amid ongoing tensions. He added, “It is hoped that Iran and the U.S. will choose peace, recommit themselves to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, and resume dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible.”

Guo also highlighted that China has been actively working to encourage an end to hostilities and facilitate peace talks since the conflict began. “Since day one of the conflict, China has been making active efforts to promote the end of the fighting and talks for peace,” he stated.

This position aligns with earlier remarks from Chinese President Xi Jinping on 25 September 2026, who expressed hope that Washington and Tehran would return promptly to dialogue-based solutions.

China’s ongoing engagement reflects its broader regional priorities, with Guo confirming that Beijing will continue efforts to restore peace and stability in the Middle East and Gulf region. The emphasis on the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a diplomatic framework reportedly pivotal to de-escalation, remains notable, though the memorandum’s exact details have not been independently verified within the current sources.

Chinese state media outlets, including Xinhua and CGTN, have consistently reported on these calls for diplomacy, underscoring Beijing’s role as a diplomatic intermediary. However, the complexities of the wider conflict and specifics of military engagements remain outside confirmed official disclosures and require cautious interpretation.

China’s consistent message underscores a preference for negotiation over escalation, seeking to influence both Iranian and American actors to recommit to peaceful resolution mechanisms amid regional instability.
