On the night of 26 September 2026 at about 9:30pm, a mass shooting at a tavern in Wedela Extension 3, near Carletonville on Gauteng’s West Rand, left 17 people dead and 15 injured. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed all 17 victims, comprising 13 men and four women, were declared dead at the scene by emergency services.
Gauteng police launched a manhunt for eight suspects armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. The gunmen reportedly shot patrons both inside and outside the tavern, searched some victims, and took their cellphones before fleeing the area in two vehicles, according to a SAPS statement.
“A total of 17 people, comprising 13 males and four females, were shot and killed during the incident. Emergency Medical Services declared all 17 victims dead at the scene. Fifteen other victims sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to medical facilities for further medical treatment,” the police said in a statement issued early on 27 September.
Police had not made any arrests by the morning of 27 September. The motive for the shooting remains unknown as investigations continue.
The SAPS opened multiple cases relating to murder, attempted murder, and malicious damage to property, intensifying efforts to track down the armed suspects. The police described the attackers as heavily armed but have not identified them publicly. Information from witnesses and forensic evidence is being collected to aid the investigation.
The Wedela massacre has become one of 2026’s deadliest tavern shootings in South Africa, highlighting ongoing firearm violence at nightlife venues. Police are also exploring links to earlier violence in the area, though unverified claims connecting the shooting to zama zama mining turf wars remain speculative and have not been confirmed by official sources.
Residents and community members in Wedela and surrounding areas are reeling from the violent attack. Many expressed shock and fear, pointing to the need for stronger policing and intervention to curb armed violence in the region.
Reliable sources confirm no victim names or detailed identities have been officially released. Investigations and forensic analysis are ongoing to provide closure and justice for the victims and their families.
