A 35-year-old man from Chatsworth was sentenced to seven years in prison by the Durban Regional Court for raping his 14-year-old step-sister on multiple occasions between March and April 2025. The court also ordered that he be registered on the National Register for Sex Offenders and declared unfit to possess a firearm or work with children.
The offences reportedly occurred repeatedly at the family home. The accused handed himself over to police, was granted R3 000 bail, and was convicted in June 2026. His application for leave to appeal was dismissed, confirming the sentence on 27 September 2026.
During sentencing, Magistrate Thobeka Nomvungu criticised the accused for abusing his position as an adult and a brother, stating, “He handed himself in and was arrested,” the complainant’s mother said, recounting the distressing period. The magistrate further cited a probation officer’s report recommending direct imprisonment to reflect the offence’s seriousness, uphold respect for the law, protect vulnerable children, and serve as punishment.
