Two fatal shootings within 48 hours have shaken rugby circles and communities in Kraaifontein, with 25-year-old rugby player Daylon Galant fatally shot in Scottsville on Tuesday night, 23 September 2026. Galant sustained a gunshot wound to the head on Greymaur Street at around 20:50 and was declared dead at the scene, according to Western Cape police.
Provincial police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana confirmed, “A 25-year-old male victim endured gunshot wounds in his head and he was declared deceased on the crime scene by medical personnel. Investigation is ongoing, the motive is still unknown, and no arrest has been made yet.” The police continue to investigate the incident.
Galant’s mother, Janine Scholtz, told Daily Voice that she believes her son may have been deliberately targeted, saying, “That was around 9.30pm when they phoned me. We still don’t know who shot him and why.” Her suspicions remain unverified by authorities.
Just two days earlier, on Monday, 21 September, two other young men from the rugby community were shot dead in Gabrielle Court, Scottsdene, Kraaifontein. Eltino “Malkak” Fortuin, 27, a player for Morningstar Rugby Club, was among the victims. He was shot multiple times, including wounds to the head, left arm, and lower back, and died at the scene around 12:05, confirmed police spokesperson Captain F.C. Van Wyk.
Approximately 30 minutes after Fortuin’s shooting, a 20-year-old man was also fatally shot in the same block. Both cases are under active investigation, with no arrests reported. Captain Van Wyk stated, “The circumstances surrounding both these incidents are under investigation. The motive for these attacks forms part of the police investigation. No suspects at this stage, the investigation is still ongoing.”
Morningstar Rugby Club publicly mourned Fortuin’s death, expressing deep sorrow for the loss of a valued member of their team.
The proximity of these shootings and the victims’ connections to local rugby clubs have raised concerns within Kraaifontein’s rugby community. However, police have not confirmed any link between the shootings in Scottsdene and Scottsville or suggested that the victims were targeted as rugby players. Nor is there verified information on any motive behind the attacks.
