Eltino “Malkak” Fortuin, a 27-year-old rugby player from Kraaifontein, was fatally shot in the head and other areas at Gabrielle Court, Scottsdene, on Monday, 21 September 2026. Police opened a murder probe after the shooting at approximately 12:05 in C-Block of the flat complex.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain F.C. Van Wyk confirmed the shooting and said Fortuin was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the head, left arm and lower back, and was declared dead at the scene by medical responders.
About 30 minutes later, a second man, aged 20, was also shot dead in the same block of flats, prompting police to treat the incident as a double murder. No arrests have been made and the motive remains under investigation.
“Kraaifontein police registered a murder case for investigation following the death of a 27-year-old male on Monday, 21 September 2026, at about 12:05, in C-Block, Gabrielle Court, Scottsdene, Kraaifontein,” Captain Van Wyk said.
The Morningstar Rugby Club, where Fortuin played, expressed deep sorrow over his death. In a statement, the club said, “It is with great sadness that the Morningstar Rugby Club family says goodbye to one of our own, Eltino ‘Malkak’ Fortuin.”
Fortuin’s mother, Janine Scholtz, spoke to the media two days after the killing. She said, “We still don’t know who shot him and why,” adding her belief that the killers specifically targeted her son, although police have not confirmed this.
The incident highlights the persistent issue of violent crime in the Kraaifontein area, which affects families and local sports communities alike. Police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward as investigations continue.
The shootings at Gabrielle Court remain under active inquiry. Authorities have yet to release a motive or identify suspects. Cape Flats News will continue monitoring the story for further developments.
