Abnormal Load Trucks Impounded on N3 During Severe Snowfall

Several abnormal-load trucks were intercepted and impounded along the N3 toll route in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday, 12 August 2026, for operating during hazardous weather conditions. The operation followed a cold front that brought freezing temperatures, rain, and light snowfall to the region, triggering the province’s emergency response plans.

Regulatory Enforcement And Road Safety

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, confirmed the impoundments, citing the immediate need to prevent accidents on the critical transit artery. “Our vigilant team from Road Traffic Inspectorate has intercepted and impounded abnormal and dangerous trucks along the N3,” Duma said during a media briefing.

The MEC further emphasised that these restrictions are non-negotiable for operator safety and public protection. “In terms of the National Road Traffic Act abnormal load operations are prohibited during these severe and dangerous weather conditions,” he added.

Operational Impact And Provincial Response

While social media reports circulated claims of a total closure, the N3 Toll Route remained operational between Cedara and Heidelberg throughout the period. The Road Traffic Inspectorate has been enforcing the provincial Snowfall Response Plan to manage traffic flow and reduce the risk of collisions involving oversized vehicles on slick roads.

This incident follows a rapid deterioration of conditions that began on 9 August, when a strong cold front first impacted the province. While the route remains open, authorities continue to monitor weather patterns to determine if further restrictions on heavy vehicle movements will be necessary as the winter storm persists. It is currently unknown how many total vehicles were impounded or when the owners will be permitted to reclaim them, and our reporter will check with the Road Traffic Inspectorate for an updated total on 13 August.
