Public backlash follows Derick Hougaard fundraising campaign

A crowdfunding campaign launched to support former Springbok fly-half Derick Hougaard has sparked significant public criticism, with social media users questioning the request for financial assistance. The initiative, titled ‘Together for Derick Hougaard’ and organised by Lizelle Gers, seeks to raise AUD$28,000—approximately R330,000—to cover the former rugby player’s living expenses, including rent and monthly bills.

Financial Hardship And Community Response

Hougaard, who retired from professional rugby in 2015 following a series of head injuries, officially endorsed the campaign on 28 July 2026, stating that he is in significant financial distress. His recent public appeal follows a challenging three-year period, including a life-threatening medical emergency in 2023 that required him to spend time in a coma due to respiratory pneumonia and receive treatment for prescription medication addiction.

Despite his history as a prominent figure in South African rugby, the fundraising effort has faced a polarised response from the public. While some supporters have contributed, many social media users have urged the former athlete to pursue traditional employment options rather than rely on public donations.

Commenting on the initiative, one Facebook user, Veronica Dumas, stated: “I can’t even dream of retiring one day… it doesn’t help to cry… One has to go on. Start looking for a job, instead of standing in the back.”

Professional Transition And Public Expectations

The backlash highlights ongoing debates regarding the post-career financial stability of professional athletes and public expectations of self-sufficiency. Some commenters suggested that Hougaard should leverage his extensive experience within the sport to generate income, with Sharl Els noting: “Derick, you have HUGE talent and a lot to give back to rugby. Coaching, consulting, etc. Start a rugby consultancy. Use your knowledge and rugby brilliance.”

Hougaard’s career path has been marked by several transitions, moving from professional rugby to a broadcasting role at SuperSport, which concluded in 2017 following controversy over his public comments. As the campaign continues, it remains to be seen whether the fundraising efforts will meet the stated target or if the former player will seek alternative professional avenues to address his financial obligations.
