South African athlete Masala Makatu secured a silver medal in the men’s T12 100m final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, clocking a time of 11.04 seconds at Scotstoun Stadium on 30 July. His achievement marks the first track and field medal for Team South Africa at this year’s competition, providing a significant boost to the national squad’s medal tally.
Race Performance And Personal Best
Makatu, a debutant at the Commonwealth Games, successfully pushed his limits against international competition in the T12 category, which is designated for Para-athletes with visual impairments. Fellow South African athlete Jaco Smit also demonstrated strong form during the final, finishing in fourth place with a time of 11.24 seconds.
I’m overwhelmed and privileged. I just came here to run and run a PB in my first Commonwealth Game, but God had other plans for me. I couldn’t see anything but could feel the guy on my left (Canada’s George Quarcoo in lane two) pushing me, and he might even have got ahead. But I pushed more to catch him, I was using him to run as fast as I can.
Context Of The Milestone Achievement
The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland have seen Team South Africa achieve early success primarily in swimming events, making Makatu’s performance on the track a vital breakthrough for the athletics team. He was coached throughout his preparation by two-time Paralympian Sheryl James, who is also competing for South Africa at the Glasgow Games.
Makatu’s journey to the podium underscores the rigorous preparation required for Para-athletics, following his qualification after placing second in his heat on 29 July. Sports officials and fans will now turn their attention to upcoming athletics finals as the team seeks to build on this podium success.
