Emma Finucane Says She Has Nothing To Prove Ahead Of 2026 Commonwealth Games

Welsh track cycling sensation Emma Finucane has stated she has nothing to prove as she prepares for her second Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place in Glasgow from 30 July to 2 August 2026. The 23-year-old athlete, who holds multiple world championship titles, heads into the event as an established international force rather than the emerging talent she was during her debut.

An Evolving Career On The Track

Finucane’s perspective on the upcoming Games reflects her rapid trajectory in the sport since her maiden appearance at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she secured two bronze medals. Following that performance, she achieved significant breakthroughs, earning Olympic gold in the team sprint at the Paris 2024 Games alongside a new world record and two individual bronze medals in the keirin and individual sprint.

I was quite new to track cycling last time out and for me it was the biggest stage I competed on for my nation. This time round I feel like I’m more of an established sprinter. I’ve grown a lot in the last four years, so much has happened on the bike and off the bike and I think I’m a different person now I’m going to this Games.

Looking To The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome

The transition from a developing competitor to a globally recognised name was further marked by her recognition in the 2025 New Year Honours, where she was awarded an MBE. Her focus now shifts to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, where she aims to deploy the experience gained on the world stage to contend for top honours.

As she prepares for the competition in Glasgow, the sporting community will be watching to see if her newfound confidence translates into further medal success. Her performance will likely serve as a benchmark for the next generation of Welsh cyclists looking to follow in her tracks.
