The Hawks have arrested two suspects in Musina and Tshikhudini, Limpopo, following an investigation into a scheme involving the unlawful processing of late birth registrations. The arrests, executed on Sunday, 26 July 2026, follow a long-running probe into irregularities detected at the Malamulele Department of Home Affairs office dating back to 10 July 2019.
Investigation Into Fraudulent Documentation
The investigation was initiated after a school official flagged suspicious documentation during an admission process for two children. It is alleged that one of the suspects had approached a relative for assistance in obtaining late birth registration certificates for children whose biological mother, a foreign national, had passed away.
Official records revealed that the birth certificates incorrectly identified the relative as the parent of the children instead of their deceased biological mother. Following the findings, the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit obtained a J50 warrant for three individuals, with authorities still searching for the third suspect.

Limpopo Hawks provincial head, Major General (Adv.) Gopz Govender, emphasised the gravity of the breach in light of national security concerns. Speaking on the implications of the case, he noted the critical importance of maintaining the integrity of the national population register.

The Department of Home Affairs has faced ongoing challenges regarding internal corruption, with fraudulent birth documentation often being used to circumvent immigration controls or unlawfully access social benefits.
