Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala and four co-accused are set to appear in the Johannesburg High Court on 20 July 2026 to face 11 counts of attempted murder. The trial marks a significant milestone in a year-long investigation into several high-profile contract killing incidents that occurred between August 2022 and January 2024.
Investigation And Legal Proceedings
The upcoming proceedings relate to targeted attacks against Tebogo Thobejane, Joe Sibanyoni, and DJ Vettys. Police launched the official investigation into these violent incidents in December 2024 following intelligence-driven operations.
The commencement of this trial is the result of months of meticulous investigations, intelligence-driven operations and evidence gathering by members who refused to give up until those responsible were brought before the courts.
Speaking at a media briefing, Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane confirmed that the state is prepared to proceed with the prosecution. Mr Matlala remains in custody after being denied bail for these attempted murder charges following his arrest in Midrand on 14 May 2025.
Corruption Case Complications
Beyond the murder-related charges, Mr Matlala is currently embroiled in a separate criminal matter involving a multi-million-rand South African Police Service (SAPS) health services tender. He recently withdrew from a plea and sentencing agreement after a court rejected the proposed terms, deeming an eight-year prison sentence insufficient given the scale of the alleged fraud.
