BMW South Africa recalls nearly 11,000 vehicles over starter motor defect

BMW South Africa has initiated a safety recall for 10,961 vehicles due to a technical defect in the starter motor that poses a potential fire risk. The National Consumer Commission (NCC) confirmed the recall on 9 July 2026, noting that the issue affects various models manufactured and sold in the country since 2016.

Affected Models And Potential Risks

The recall campaign covers specific units across the 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X3, and X4 ranges. According to the NCC, the problem stems from a solenoid switch within the starter motor that is prone to increased wear after a high volume of operational cycles.

This degradation can result in the engine failing to start or, in certain conditions, cause local overheating that creates a fire hazard. The commission has advised that all necessary corrective repairs will be performed by BMW at no cost to the vehicle owners.

Guidance For Vehicle Owners

To mitigate the immediate risk while awaiting repairs, BMW AG has issued specific operational warnings to drivers of the affected models. Owners are urged to disable the ‘Remote Engine Start’ function and ensure the vehicle is not left unattended immediately after the engine has been started.

This action is part of a wider series of global quality interventions by the manufacturer concerning starter components. As the recall process moves forward, affected customers should expect direct communication from BMW regarding scheduling for their vehicle inspections and repairs.
