Wesizwe Platinum is in the final stages of implementing a new SAP S/4HANA enterprise resource planning (ERP) system to replace legacy software compromised in a major cyberattack in December 2024. The transition forms part of a critical operational stabilisation strategy following significant financial reporting disruptions and a regulatory suspension of the company’s shares on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
Operational Recovery And Digital Infrastructure
The December 2024 cyberattack severely hampered the mining firm’s internal financial systems, forcing the company to rely on manual processing for mission-critical tasks for several months. These complications led to delays in the publication of audited financial statements, ultimately triggering a suspension of trade on the JSE in March 2026. The shift to SAP S/4HANA is intended to restore robust administrative controls and ensure compliance with modern digital reporting requirements.
Workforce Restructuring At Bakubung
Concurrent with its IT overhaul, the company initiated a Section 189(3) consultation process on 4 June 2026 at its Bakubung Platinum Mine in the North West province. This formal restructuring is aimed at aligning the workforce with an updated business plan focused on a 3.5 Mtpa operational model.
The proposed restructuring is expected to affect approximately 497 employees across various staff levels and disciplines throughout the business.
This revised strategy will necessitate a reduction in the number of employees required to establish and sustain the production profile contemplated in the updated business plan.
The company maintains that these measures are essential to navigate historical funding challenges and recent operational pressures. Stakeholders expect further updates on the workforce restructuring and the finalisation of the system migration in the coming weeks.
