The Eastern Cape Department of Education has confirmed it is investigating the principal of Kabega Park Primary School in Gqeberha following allegations that he assaulted a Grade 7 pupil during a rugby match on 17 February 2026. The department’s spokesperson, Malibongwe Mtima, stated that the probe into the conduct of the principal, Andrew Jonas, is currently underway.
Investigation And Formal Complaint
According to reports, the incident involved the principal allegedly striking the student, using verbal abuse, and forcibly removing the boy’s rugby jersey on the field in front of other players. The matter was formally escalated to the Eastern Cape Department of Education’s district office on 26 May 2026 by a retired teacher, Corrie Van Eck, after the learner’s parents had previously lodged a complaint in March.
The incident left the learner feeling humiliated and emotionally distressed.

Allegations of violence by staff against pupils in school sporting environments have raised concerns regarding the duty of care and the professional conduct expected of educators. Schools are bound by strict provincial and national codes of conduct that prohibit corporal punishment and physical intimidation, regardless of the setting or the pressure of competition.
