US and Iran sign peace agreement to end military operations

The United States and Iran have reached a comprehensive peace agreement to terminate military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon. The deal, announced on 14 June 2026, marks a significant shift in the geopolitical landscape following over three months of intensified conflict and rising regional volatility.

Diplomatic Resolution And The Strait Of Hormuz

The agreement, facilitated by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, includes a commitment to the permanent cessation of hostilities. Upon the announcement, United States President Donald Trump confirmed via his Truth Social platform that he would authorise the immediate removal of the United States naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

I hereby fully authorise the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorise the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade.

Speaking on the broader scope of the resolution, Prime Minister Sharif stated that both nations had formally declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations across all active fronts. The parties are set to meet in Switzerland on 19 June 2026 to officially sign a memorandum of understanding to formalise these commitments.

International Response And Pending Verification

Following news of the agreement, the E4 nations—comprising the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy—announced their readiness to lift existing sanctions on Iran, provided the country adheres to verified steps regarding its nuclear programme. While the immediate ceasefire has been welcomed as a critical step toward regional stability, analysts caution that long-term implementation faces challenges regarding the specific management of maritime routes and nuclear oversight.

While various media reports have speculated on financial components, such as the potential release of billions in frozen assets or large-scale reconstruction plans, these specific figures remain unverified by official United States government sources. Preparatory technical meetings are expected to take place in Doha in the coming days as delegations finalise the details ahead of the scheduled ceremony in Switzerland.
