SIU Secures Seizure Of Bentley Sold Amid Tembisa Hospital Fraud Probe

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has obtained a contempt of court order and seizure directive against Omar Motor Den after the dealership sold a Bentley Continental GT linked to the ongoing Tembisa Hospital procurement fraud investigation, the unit confirmed on Tuesday.

SIU Targets Assets In R2 Billion Tembisa Hospital Corruption Case

The SIU’s actions follow a series of raids and asset seizures targeting the Maumela syndicate, identified as central to irregular tenders totalling over R2 billion at Tembisa Hospital. Hangwani Maumela, alleged as a ringleader, had luxury vehicles and properties worth more than R75 million seized after a preservation order was granted in October 2025. According to the SIU, the Bentley was identified as benefiting from proceeds of fraud, and the dealership was ordered to immediately cease any dealings with the vehicle.

“The order directs the dealership to refrain from any further dealing with, moving, trading, alienating or dissipating the vehicle until further order from the Tribunal,” the SIU said in a statement. Assets such as the Bentley, previously preserved by court order, are regarded as critical for the recovery of funds stolen through irregular contracts. The Maumela syndicate is linked to at least R816 million linked to fraudulent hospital tenders, according to SIU investigations.

Presidency Distances Ramaphosa From Maumela Amid Public Scrutiny

Amid widespread speculation over familial connections, the Presidency has publicly denied any personal relationship between President Cyril Ramaphosa and Hangwani Maumela. Vincent Magwenya, Presidency spokesperson, clarified at a media briefing in October last year: “The president maintains that he has no personal relationship with Maumela. He is not related to him, except that he was married to his aunt many years ago.”

Tembisa Hospital’s corruption scandal has generated national concern, with public sector procurement and accountability under renewed scrutiny. Recovery of stolen assets through court orders is part of the national effort to demonstrate seriousness in tackling large-scale corruption in the public health sector. The SIU’s pursuit of vehicles and properties allegedly bought with looted funds is seen as a key step in returning assets to the state and deterring future misconduct.

The Bentley Continental GT remains subject to the SIU’s seizure order as investigations and asset recovery efforts continue.
