A woman charged with the theft of about R80000 from the Western Cape Provincial Health Department, has had to forfeit her R28000 pension along with receiving a 12 month jail sentence that was conditionally suspended for 5 years.

Melanie Otto, who pleaded guilty before Magistrate Amrith Chabilall in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court also has to undertake 16 hours of community service per month and attend rehabilitation programmes for her actions.

She stole the money over a three year period through the processing of fraudulent overtime, standby, subsistence and travel allowance claims - all of which were duties given to her in her line of work. By making use of her line manager's identification, she processed claims for herself and channeled the money into her personal bank account.
